Middle School Sculpture Chug

February 24, 2022 by Ronit Greenstein (Faculty and Staff)

Wandering around the North Campus, you might encounter imaginative, vibrant, and colorful mounted head trophies. These sculptures (often dramatic) and the accompanying artists statements (often funny) are the work of MILTON’s middle school artists. Students in the 3D Sculpture elective were challenged to create original mythical creatures. They learned how to create an armature, use plaster and wire to create interesting shapes, and techniques for embellishing artwork to add more character. To accompany their sculptures, students drafted artist statements, which sometimes focused on the materials used and technical experience of creating sculpture, and sometimes included fantastical stories about their mythical creatures’ lives, where they live, and often their origin stories. The 3D sculpture chug (elective) is one of several art-based elective classes available to students during the first trimester. Kol hakavod to all the students in the 3D sculpture chug and to their teacher, Jill Stepak!
