Meet the Middle School Zoning Committee: Co-Chair Helaine Greenfeld

April 19, 2016

Our family has been involved with JPDS-NC for the last 16 years, since our son, Jake, started Kindergarten at the old Montgomery Hills location, continuing with my tenure as a Board Trustee and President, our daughter Abby’s graduation in 2011, and through to my current terms returning to the Board and serving as Co-Chair of the Zoning Committee. JPDS-NC has been an important part of our lives all of the time, providing an excellent education and founding in Jewish life to our children, and giving us a community of friends and neighbors for a lifetime. It is for that reason that I wanted to be involved in the effort to expand our school to include 7th and 8th grades, and to ensure that JPDS-NC is always an integral part of the fabric of DC Jewish life.
Securing zoning approval for the Middle School expansion was my second foray into zoning on JPDS-NC’s behalf. In 2007 I testified before the Board of Zoning Adjustment to secure an increase to our enrollment cap so we could grow beyond our original size. This time, with the help of my Co-Chair Rob Zucker, our lawyers, and so many others at JPDS-NC, we were able to detail for our neighbors, the local Advisory Neighborhood Commission, and the BZA that a school serving two more grades will only be a positive for the community. I was happy to be of help, and look forward to doing all I can to make the Middle School a reality.
