MILTON’s Growing Athletics Program: Fall Recap and Looking Forward

November 15, 2024 by Catherine Horowitz (Faculty and Staff)

In just a few short years, MILTON has built a strong and growing Athletics program. This year is MILTON’s second in the PVAC (Potomac Valley Athletic Conference), and we have been steadily building on the successes of our first year. We are excited to see our program grow in terms of skill, size, and community engagement. Here are some program highlights:

Volleyball

Fall is a busy time for MILTON Athletics. In the last week of October, our 18-member girls volleyball team concluded their regular season with a 6-3 record and, for the second year in a row, made the PVAC Playoffs! This season, the team built on their previous successes. “The girls grew so much from last year,” says Coach Hannah Fox. “We had a lot of girls attempting overhand serves and jumping high up at the net. They did great practicing these skills in practice and were able to show it in games!”

Coach Hannah is also proud of the teamwork and comradery the team displayed this season: “It is such a great group of girls that support each other on and off the court. They have a special bond they will share forever.” She looks forward to the current 7th graders becoming leaders of the team in 8th grade.

Although the volleyball team lost in the PVAC Semifinals, Hannah says hosting the game was a highlight of the season and some of the best volleyball the team has played.

Cross Country and Track and Field

Our cross country team also concluded their season in October. At the PVAC Championship, grade 7 student Yair W won first place among all boys, concluding a run of first place wins in almost every meet throughout the season.

This season, the cross country team had 19 boys and 10 girls. It was generally a young team, with many grade 5 students and just one in grade 8, who was captain of the boys team. Despite this, the team had a successful season with the boys often competing for 2nd in meets. These young athletes developed a strong foundation of athletic skills that they will continue to build upon during their future years on the team.

Our track team, which meets during the spring season, also experienced successes this past school year with students receiving medals in many events such as boys 4×400 and girls shot put (where we had a first place finish!)

Basketball

In November, our winter basketball season begins. MILTON has a boys A and girls A team, which compete in the PVAC, as well as a boys B team competing against other local B teams. We also offer both a boys and girls 5th/6th team, which focus on developing skills. Basketball is extremely popular at MILTON, with teams at full capacity and energized crowds at our games.

Last winter was an extremely successful first season in the conference for our boys A team, who made it to the PVAC Championship and ultimately lost to Berman Hebrew Academy. This year, MILTON has hired coach Arnell Milton to lead the boys A team on another successful and competitive season, while Coach Reggie Wade has high expectations for the girls A team. Both basketball teams are aiming to finish in the top four of the PVAC regular season standings, gaining home court advantage for conference play at the end of the season.

Growing our Program

The Athletics program has grown in other ways as well this fall. In early November, MILTON hosted its first volleyball invitational, which hosted four girls volleyball teams and took place over the course of two afternoons. The tournament was a huge success with all four teams planning on attending next year. We also plan on growing the tournament by adding more schools next year and in years to come.

Finally, we are thrilled to announce our new merchandise store, which includes a wide variety of clothing and accessories. You can purchase general school spirit wear, merch for each of our teams, and merch for family members (calling “MILTON Grandmas!”). Options include hoodies, T-shirts, vests, hats, chairs, blankets, and pants–just to name a few! We hope the extra team spirit brings excitement and energy to games and other school events in the future.
