March 19, 2021

MILTON Educator Vinny Prell had an article published by the DC Area Educators for Social Justice/Teaching for Change. In the article, Vinny reflected on a lesson and book discussion she had with her fourth graders around a children’s book, Don’t Touch My Hair by author and illustrator Sharee Miller. The lesson included a discussion around African-American hair traditions and culture. The lesson dovetails with the fourth grade exploration of cultures around the world, enhancing the students’ understanding of the definition of culture in general, and their awareness of the ways that African and African American hairstyles reflected the impact of and resistance to racism. Kol hakavod, Vinny! Read the article here.
