Meet the Middle School Facilities Committee: Co-Chair Emily Appelbaum

February 10, 2016

My family joined JPDS-NC a year ago, in early 2015, after moving to DC from Cambridge, MA. My husband Yoni, daughter Elisheva (2nd grade), son Joshua (Kindergarten), and I are so grateful for the way that JPDS-NC has welcomed our family into its community from day one. When I learned about the opportunity to contribute to the work of the Facilities Committee for the Middle School, I was eager to volunteer. I work as a structural engineer in the Washington, DC office of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) and have more than a decade of experience in the structural design and renovation of various types of buildings, including educational, cultural, religious, healthcare, and residential structures. I also belong to a number of professional engineering organizations and am a member of the Committee on Architecture for Education within Washington, DC’s chapter of the American Institute of Architects. It is truly rewarding to bring my experience in school design to the table to help the school grow, and, as a newer parent at the school, it’s been a great way for me to learn what JPDS-NC is all about!
