Forty Two MILTON Students Achieve Global Seal of Biliteracy

February 21, 2024 by Elizabeth Zitelli (Faculty and Staff)

We are excited to share that based on the latest Avant Hebrew assessment, a remarkable 42 MILTON students were awarded the Global Seal of Biliteracy. This award is given in recognition of students who attained a functional fluency in Hebrew, a designation given to students who earned a proficiency level of Intermediate mid-5 or higher on all four skill areas of the Avant assessment.

Cindy Dolgin of Hebrew at the Center stated, “This is a HUGE and impressive accomplishment! No other school has so many 8th graders earning the Global Seal of Biliteracy!” These numbers represent an impressive 58% biliteracy rate for those tested from MILTON’s class of 2023. Students who achieved this honor were eligible to participate in the HESEG Award Ceremony hosted on Zoom by Hebrew at the Center.

MILTON’s program follows the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), which rates Hebrew as a level 3 difficulty language because of its separate alphabet system and structure of the language. This means it takes longer to achieve a proficiency level in Hebrew than in other languages, such as Spanish or Italian, so our students’ achievement is especially notable.

We want to wish a hearty mazal tov to our students and express our deep gratitude to our Hebrew faculty. The achievement of MILTON students in Hebrew language learning is a testament to our teachers’ dedication and their incredible efforts to engage and advance the students and the school’s commitment to Hebrew language education.
