A Letter from Athletic Director Yonah Singer

August 4, 2016 by Yonah Singer (Faculty and Staff)

I am thrilled and excited to join the staff of a place as amazing as JPDS-NC. Athletics is a true passion of mine and I look forward to continuing and growing the athletics program at JPDS.

I grew up in Silver Spring and graduated from the Berman Hebrew Academy. After graduation and a year of study in Israel, I attended University of Maryland (go Terps!) and received a BA in American History. Upon graduation I moved to New York City and received a MA in special education while also teaching in an inner city school. I then spent five years as a special educator at SAR Academy, a Jewish day school in Riverdale New York. After living in New York for seven years, I moved back to Silver Spring with my family in 2013 and worked at the Auburn School, an independent school serving students on the autism spectrum. Most recently, I taught at Silver Spring International Middle School, a Montgomery County Public school, in their Autism Resource Program.

While teaching continues to be a passion of mine, sports and athletics have played an equally important role in my life. In my senior year at Maryland, I was invited to participate in professional basketball tryouts in Israel before getting injured. This paved the way for a fulfilling coaching career. I have coached basketball for both boys and girls teams at public and independent schools for more than 10 years. I also spend my summers as the Head of the sports camp at the Jewish Community Center in Rockville. I am really excited to develop an athletics program that caters to athletes who are looking for competition in an inter-school format, while also providing opportunities for recreational sports for athletes of all ages and ability levels.

In my spare time, I love to spend time with my family, my wife Michelle and our two sons Judah (6), and Josh (3). I am an avid Orioles (sorry Nationals fans!), Wizards, Capitals, and Redskins fan. When my children allow me a quiet moment, I also love to read and relax (all the parents know how often that happens!)

I look forward to joining an amazing community of educators, parents, and students. Thank you to everybody who has already welcomed me warmly to JPDS-NC.
